Strongest 3 pavilion ideas

These 3 paper model designs were the strongest designs compared to previous concepts.

The following are the models which were developed from these designs.

Cardboard and Paper Models for TV studio set design

These TV studio set designs for the TV programme "Int Min Int?" were made out of thin cardboard and paper.  The red reflects a red carpet which welcomes the guests.  The black and white colours reflect different races all connected into one community of people.  Seating lies at the left, the artist at the middle back area, and the stage on the right hand side of the studio.

Paper Models

These are preliminary paper models for the pavilion design.  They were made by cutting and folding, as well as paper found objects such as cake decorations and paper cupcake holders.

"The Late Late Show" 2009

"The Late Late Show" by Darragh Treacy was the winner of the 2009 idi Design Awards. It is a set design for all ages, but it relates to youths as it is a comedy talk show.  The theme for this studio was to create a warm and timeless studio set, created by its warm curved wood panels and flooring, as well as relaxing lighting.

The set is made out of walnut (wood) and Velvet draping, giving the area a rich and luxurious look.  It is then surrounded by sleek clean lined furniture and modern lighting technologies which all in all, give the place a retro yet contemporary look.  The theme for this show was perfectly executed.

"All Access"

This is a 2010 Television studio set designed by Michael Grill. The show is an M-Net studio called All Access, which is a magazine show programme.  What instantly captures the eye is the fresh look given by its linear contemporary forms.   The glossy flooring and panelling contrasting tones, between dark, matt and luminous objects, gives the place a unique perspective.

"Good Friday Show"

This set design captures the eye by the use of neon LED lighting.  The set is made up of a seating area for the audience all around the stage area where all the action gaming takes place.  The seating is integrated with the stairs continuously with the stage curve.  On the right the players stay on a pedestal and at the back lays a piano playing section. On the left the set can be easily changed depending on the game played.

Visual Permeability Pavilion

Visual-Permeability-Pavilion-04-Furniture-Design

The idea of this pavilion is to relax with friends and family, as one can sit, chat and walk on this pavilion.  Half of it is designed for the ones who would like to relax and are located in a private setting.  The other is for having a conversation between four people.

The idea of shape came from one continuous strip that wraps around itself.  The wood then touches the ground at very small regions, feeling as though it grows out from the ground.  Each area is sectioned in three sections and densities; the lower part having the most density is for walking on, the second are rising up is a bit lighter and serves as a backrest to form seating and the top parts serve as shading and this part has the least volume.

The material used is furniture/grade birch plywood.  What is great about birch wood is that it withstands rain and any other unusual weather conditions.  The process was made with various digital fabrication techniques, meaning using only digital design methods.

Mafoombey

Mafoombey was designed by Martti Kalliala and Esa Ruskeepää.  It is a space where one can relax and listen to music. The space is made up of a passage and a sitting area, which seats from 2 to 3 people. It also contains an indentation for a DVD player for music.  The structure itself contains energy saving lights and surround speakers in the internal structure.

Corrugated cardboard was chosen for this installation.  The reason behind this is that it is low cost, acoustic, aesthetically pleasing as well as owns several mass production advantages.  They wanted to use something which is recyclable, like old carpets but in the end this was the best solution.  The drawbacks of cardboard are that it is still light weighted and non-resistant to water.  On the other hand it is easily constructed and deconstructed, and also transported easily.

snøhetta

This pavilion is found in Norway at the outskirts of Dovrefjell national park overlooking the mountain Snohetta.  It was inspired by the natural beauty of the mountain itself and its history of myths and cultures.  The idea behind this pavilion is to have a seat and feel warm inside the cold surrounding whilst still enjoying the beautiful view of the mountains.

"Hot and Cold" Structure

This was a structure made for a unit called opposites attract. I was inspired by fire and ice as seen in their stylized forms. It was made by the use of a technique called inlaying and arquette. I created opposites also by using different woods and aluminium. The hexagon can be tilted to and side one wants as to be seen by several different point of views.

"Luzzu" Mobile toilet

This is a mobile toilet design. The inspiration started from a maltese Luzzu. The design is also functional for wheelchair use. A wheelchair can swivel in a 360 degrees manner and use all facilities. The water tank lies beneath the sink and the lower area of the left hand side of the toilet. The door is integrated in the cubic grid forms as to form part of the design itself. The sun may shine through the top part of the toilet through two perspex sun lights. The structure is made out of polyethylene and each side can be easily disassembled.

"Shape It" Modular Jewel Box

This is a modular jewel box. The concept is to create different shapes and forms as to fit in any limited space.  I was inspired by the scales found in a snake skin. The boxes are made out of perspex and ash wood. Inside lies a piece of small cushion made out of foam and creased drapery.  The lid opens and closes by the use of an added inlay on the inside of the lid and a chain was done at one end as each side is the exact match to each lid. The reason behind this is because of the way each box was made.  The sides and angles were cut and glued together with the perspex positioned in place by the use of a 3mm grove.  The whole box was then cut through as for the top part to form a lid making each side perfect for its lid. The boxes were finished using liquid sanding and wax.

"Bubble" Haute Couture Costume Jewellery

This was a design made in higher national diploma yr1. It was inspired by pebbles and designers Paco Robane and Sarina Suriano. The piece was made with Pine and Mahagony. Pine was chosen particularly for its change in grain and colour created when turned on the lathe. This type of wood is also one of the lightest existing.  Mahagony is then used as to create a different pattern due to its contrast in grain and colour compared to Pine. The pieces where then all liquid sanded and sanded evenly and waxed as to give it a smooth surface on the skin and also as a form of protection from humidity. The pieces where then drilled and chained together using screw eyed screws. This piece was warn in the fashion show and exhibited in the June 2011 Flavours Exhibibition at MCAST Mosta.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/hazehaze/5896203351/in/photostream/lightbox/
